In 2015, he contested elections from Grand Alliance seat from Tikari assembly constituency on JDU ticket, in which he won. After that, he contested elections again in 2020 on JDU ticket from Belaganj assembly constituency, in which he had to face a crushing defeat from RJD candidate Dr. Surendra Prasad. However, the political journey of former MLA Abhay Kushwaha started in 2000. In 2000, he contested elections as an independent candidate from Gaya city assembly constituency. After that, in 2005, he was elected head from Kujapi Panchayat. At that time he was a youth leader of Rashtriya Janata Dal.
