It is said that no soldier or jawan of the army is ever off duty. A living example of this was seen on July 18 when train number 15904 Chandigarh Dibrugarh Express derailed between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh.

In fact, Pramod Kumar, Sub Inspector of Railway Police Force (RPF) Post Chhapra Junction, under Northeast Railway Varanasi Division, was also returning to Chhapra in coach number B-1 after being off duty after giving testimony in Railway Court Gonda. Then the train met with an accident, due to which many AC and sleeper coaches of Chandigarh Dibrugarh Express derailed and overturned. During that time, due to the screaming all around, for a moment, Sub Inspector Pramod Kumar could not understand what had happened suddenly.

He too was injured in the incident, as many passengers fell on him when his coach overturned. But he immediately realized his uniform and duty, because a soldier is trained to deal with such situations and circumstances. His B-1 coach was hanging in a tilted position of 75 to 80 degrees. There was a high possibility of many other passengers including women and children getting crushed and injured when the stampede occurred and the coach overturned. During this time, Pramod Kumar immediately informed about this accident on the available RPF numbers of Lucknow division. Then, acting with full prudence on the spot, he broke the glass of the emergency window and door with the help of some passengers. After that, he safely took out the passengers, women and children of his coach and the other coach that had been hit by the accident.

When the incident happened and till the arrival of Motiganj police from the nearest police station of Gonda district, Sub Inspector Pramod Kumar was present alone in uniform. He performed his duty with his intelligence and saved the injured passengers, women and children as much as possible. On the other hand, when the police of Kopaganj police station arrived, with their help, four seriously injured passengers and the dead were sent to the hospital.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of RPF, it was said that despite being badly injured on the spot, Sub Inspector Pramod Kumar, using his intelligence and knowledge gained during RPF training, saved many passengers by performing the duty of his uniform even while being on leave. He is undoubtedly unique, praiseworthy and a lifesaver. With his work, Sub Inspector Pramod Kumar has made the entire RPF proud.
