This day is known as Cheti Chand due to the first sighting of the moon in the month of Cheti. There is a mythological belief that in ancient times Lord Jhulelal had protected the Sindhis from the tyrant Mirkhshah. Therefore, Lord Jhulelal’s birthday is very important for him.

How to celebrate Cheti Chand

On the occasion of Cheti Chand, water god Varun is also worshipped, because the people of Sindhi community consider Lord Jhulelal as the incarnation of water god. On this day, a puja called “Chaliho Sahib” is performed on the banks of river Indus. On the day of Cheti Chand, devotees build a wooden temple and light a pot of water and flame in it, this is called Bahirana Sahib. Devotees carry the idol of Lord Jhulelal on their heads and perform Chhej dance to bring out a tableau.
