Chhath Puja 2024: The great festival of folk faith, Chhath (Mahaparv Chhath) is dedicated to Surya Dev (Surya Dev) and Chhathi Maiya (Chhathi Maiya), which falls twice a year in the months of Kartik and Chaitra. There are many traditions, rules and importance associated with the four-day long Chhath festival. Starting from Nahay Khay, this festival ends by offering Arghya to the rising sun.

Kartik Chhath started this year on 5 November 2024 and will end on 8 November. In this, the third and fourth days of Chhath Puja are considered the most important, in which Chhathi Maiya and Sun God are worshipped.

There is a tradition of offering Arghya to the setting sun on the third day of Chhath Puja, while on the next day i.e. on Saptami Tithi, Arghya is offered to the rising sun. What is the reason behind this that during Chhath, first the devotee worships the setting sun by offering Arghya and then the rising Sun is also offered Arghya. When there is an atmosphere of Chhath festival and these traditions are being followed for years, then we all must know the reason for it.

Importance of offering Arghya to the setting sun during Chhath festival.

Astachalgami Arghya will be offered on 7 November 2024. During the festival of Chhath, the fasting person stands in waist-deep water in the river ghat and offers Arghya to the setting sun. This day is called Sandhya Arghya and Surya Shashthi. Offering Arghya to the setting Sun is considered very important.

Chhath is the only festival in which the setting Sun is saluted by offering Arghya. The setting sun is not worshiped in any other festival in Hinduism. According to mythological beliefs, Sun God stays with his wife Pratyusha in the evening. In Chhath Puja, Arghya is offered to Pratyusha, the last ray of the sun, in the evening puja.

Importance of offering Arghya to the rising Sun during Chhath festival (Importance of offering Arghya to the Sun in Chhath Puja)

After offering Arghya to the setting sun, it is very important to offer Arghya to the rising sun. Chhath festival ends only after offering Arghya to the setting and rising sun. On 8th November, the last day of Chhath, Udayagami Surya Arghya is offered. It is also called Usha Arghya.

According to religious belief, at the time of sunrise in the morning, Sun God lives with his wife Usha, who is the first ray of the Sun. She is also called the goddess of dawn. By offering Udayagami Arghya during Chhath Puja, all the wishes are fulfilled.

Meaning of offering water to the setting and rising sun

• The reason behind offering Arghya to the setting sun is the way the sun sets and then rises again. Similarly, there are ups and downs in life also.
• Just as the sun rises again after setting every day. In the same way, the moments of happiness or sadness in life also do not always remain constant, rather happiness and sorrow keep coming and going.
• Offering Arghya to the setting and rising sun during Chhath festival is considered a symbol of the end as well as a new beginning.
• There is also a belief that while offering Arghya to the setting and rising sun, the skin does not cry due to the effect of its light. It also provides relief from many problems.
