Chhattarpur: Farmers’ fields turned into ponds, hundreds of acres of crops destroyed, demand for compensation from the government

Due to release of canal water in Chhatarpur district, crops standing in hundreds of acres of fields of farmers of Mahayaba village were submerged. This caused a loss of lakhs of rupees. Farmers say that their crops have been ruined due to the negligence of the irrigation department.

Farmer Swatantra Shastri says that every year the fields get flooded. This time more acres have been flooded. Every year 250 acres of farmland gets flooded. There were peas and wheat in our 7-8 acre farm, which has been ruined.

The field is filled with water since 15 days
Farmer Rajendra Pachauri said that he had sown wheat in 5 acres. It has been filled with water for 15 days. Even if we remove water from the fields, there is no point. It is not only my farm that has drowned. Due to this, the standing crops of many farmers have been ruined.

9 bigha pea field filled with water
Young farmer Ravi Tiwari tells that every year 4 and a half bigha of our farm was filled with water. But this time more than 4 bighas of land has been flooded. Green peas costing Rs 13 thousand per quintal were sown in about 9 bighas. Had plowed 7 to 8 times, but now everything is ruined.

Farmers have told their pain to CM
Farmer Rajendra Singh Yadav says that 3 fields have been submerged. Gram and peas were sown in 12 bighas. There has been a loss of Rs 1 lakh. Farms get submerged every year. We have informed this by submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister.

Due to this, water fills the fields
According to farmers, the canal water comes from raw drain. This raw drain is incomplete, due to which further water is not able to drain out. Then this water goes to the fields. Farmers say that this raw drain should be extended further till the pond or river so that in future the farmers’ fields do not get filled due to drainage of water.

The officer said this regarding the matter
Officer CK Jain, who came to inspect the spot, says that he has come to find out the reason why this water is filled. Bambi (raw drain) was constructed a few years ago to drain the water. But some farmers of the village did not allow the complete drain to be built, due to which the raw drain remained incomplete. The demand of the farmers was that the drain should be made permanent. If the farmers ask, we will remove water from the fields.

Paved drain will be built through tender process
Lalabhai Tiwari says that he used to look after the work, but when the raw drain was being built, some farmers did not allow the complete drain to be built. Due to this reason the drain had to be partially closed. The water of the canal comes from the drain and due to lack of water going further, the water comes to the fields. There will be a tender process for the concrete drain, only after this the complete concrete drain will be built here.
