Chief Justice Chandrachud farewell says Father had told me to keep house in Pune till retirement


CJI Chandrachud Farewell: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is going to retire on Sunday (10 November 2024), before that a farewell ceremony was held in the Supreme Court on Friday, his last working day in the Supreme Court on 8 November. During this time, he shared many things about his family, parents, personal lives and narrated his experiences.

In this farewell ceremony, CJI Chandrachud said, “I would like to thank the Supreme Court Bar Association from the bottom of my heart. My mother told me in my childhood that I have named you Dhananjay, but the ‘wealth’ of your ‘Dhananjay’ is not material wealth. I want you to gain knowledge.

‘Father had bought a small flat in Pune’

CJI also narrated an anecdote related to his father in the farewell ceremony. He said that my father bought a small flat in Pune, I asked him why are you buying a flat here? So he said keep this flat till you retire as a judge so that you know that if your morality comes under attack, you will have a place to hide your head.” The CJI further said that My father had said, “While being a lawyer or a judge, never compromise your principles because you do not have your own house.”

‘Sunlight is the best disinfectant’

The CJI said, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant. I know that in many ways I have put my life before public knowledge. When you put your life before public knowledge, you open yourself up to criticism. Especially in today’s social media era, I have broad shoulders to accept all the criticism that we have faced. He said, “If I have ever hurt any of you, please forgive me.” Chief Justice Chandrachud’s tenure began on November 8, 2022. With humility and respect for the legal fraternity, it ended today on November 8, 2024. .
