Chief Justice DY Chandrachud last day at work In his farewell message reflected on his journey in judiciary


CJI Last Day At Work: Friday (8 November) was the last day of DY Chandrachud’s tenure as the Chief Justice of the country. He reflected on his judicial journey with gratitude and humility. Addressing a court filled with his colleagues and members of the legal fraternity, he shared his personal views and summed up his tenure. He also apologized to those people who were inadvertently hurt by him.

He said, “Yesterday evening, when my registrar asked me when the ceremony should take place, I was told at 2 pm because we can wrap up a lot of things. I thought to myself, what on Friday at 2 pm in this court? Will there be someone? Or I will see myself on the screen.”

‘Our work can make matters worse or make them worse’

Expressing his appreciation, Justice Chandrachud said that as a young lawyer he witnessed the art of arguments and learned valuable techniques of court functioning. He said, “We are here to work as pilgrims and the work we do can make or break cases. There have been great justices who have graced this court and this position will carry forward Has increased.”

Expressing confidence about the future of the institution under his successor, he said, “There will be no difference in this court after my departure, because a stable and dignified person like Justice Khanna will take charge of this court.”

‘Learned a lot from my 45 decisions’

Reflecting on what has sustained him during his journey, he said, “When you ask me what keeps me going, the answer is what keeps me going. This is the journey of becoming a justice. I thank you all and you all have taught me a lot about law and life. I have also learned a lot about life from the 45 cases I have dealt with today.”

Why did DY Chandrachud apologize?

He said, “If I have ever offended any of you, I would like to say that if I have not offended you, please forgive me.” The tenure of Chief Justice Chandrachud started on November 8, 2022. Ended today on 8th November 2024 with humility and respect towards the legal fraternity.
