PM dedicates Sela Tunnel to the nation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Saturday (9 March 2024), Sela Tunnel, located at an altitude of 13,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh, was dedicated to the nation. This tunnel will provide all-weather road connectivity to Tawang, which has strategic importance. This is also expected to ensure easy movement of troops in the border areas.

This tunnel has been built on the road connecting Tezpur of Assam to West Kameng district of Arunachal. It is being said to be the world’s longest double lane road tunnel located at such a height. According to military officials, troops and weapon systems can be easily transported to various forward locations located on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China through the Sela Tunnel.

China claims Arunachal to be South Tibet. To emphasize this claim, it has regularly objected to Indian leaders visiting the state. Beijing has named the area Zangnan. At the same time, India has repeatedly rejected China’s claim on Arunachal and said that this state is an integral part of the country (India).

New Delhi has rejected China’s move to name the area, saying it cannot change the truth. When asked by the official media at a press conference on Monday about Modi’s visit to Arunachal, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, “Zangnan area is China’s territory.”

He said, “China has never recognized Arunachal Pradesh under India and has strongly opposed it.” He said that the China-India border dispute has not been resolved yet. India has no right to arbitrarily develop the area of Zangnan in China.

“India’s related steps will only (further) complicate the border dispute,” a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said. China firmly opposes the Prime Minister’s visit to the eastern section of the China-India border. “We have lodged a diplomatic protest with India,” Wang said.
