According to reports, traders in Gujarat’s Rajkot recently staged a day-long protest after several bags of Chinese garlic were found at the Gondal Agricultural Produce Market Cooperative (APMC). “We are protesting against the illegal entry of Chinese garlic into India despite the ban,” Yogesh Kayada, president of the traders’ association at the Gondal APMC, told PTI. The report said Chinese garlic is distinct because of its size and aroma and is cheaper than the local crop, making it profitable for smugglers and agents.

How is it different from Indian garlic?

It is worth noting that China is the world’s largest garlic producer. Let’s know about Chinese garlic and also know how it is different from Indian garlic? Also known as Allium sativum, it is grown all over the country, according to Jinal Patel, dietician at Zinova Shalby Hospital, explaining the difference between Chinese and Indian garlic, she said, nowadays, apart from Indian, Chinese garlic is also available in the market. However, people do not know the difference between the two. Chinese garlic is light white and pink in color and is smaller in size. The smell of Indian garlic is strong and pungent, while the aroma of Chinese garlic is mild.

According to Patel, Indian garlic is grown with minimal chemicals and is safe for consumption. Chinese garlic is grown with the integration of modern agricultural techniques which involves heavy use of chemicals and pesticides. Therefore, Chinese garlic is not at all safe for consumption for health and overall well-being. Chinese garlic also contains synthetic substances which can be dangerous. He emphasized on eating Indian garlic instead of Chinese garlic as it is full of natural flavors and is grown using traditional agricultural practices in the country.
