The results of the Gujarat assembly elections are out. This time the Bharatiya Janata Party has created a new record. In Gujarat, which has 182 assembly seats, 156 BJP candidates won the elections. The Congress suffered the most. The Congress came straight down to 17 from 77 seats. Means Congress had to bear the loss of 60 seats. At the same time, this time only five candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party, which claimed to form the government, could win the elections. The SP candidate won one seat, while the remaining three seats were won by independent candidates.
The BJP had fielded Shamajibhai Chauhan from the Chotila assembly seat in Surendranagar district. AAP’s Rajubhai Karpada was in front of him. BJP’s Shamajibhai Chauhan defeated AAP’s Rajubhai Karpada by 25,642 votes. BJP candidate got 71,039 votes while AAP got 45397 votes here. Congress’s Rutvikbhai Lavjibhai Makwana remained at number three. He got 43,332 votes, which was 25.94 percent of the total votes. There were six candidates, including the BSP candidate, whose deposits were forfeited. NOTA got 2,582 votes here.
Congress got victory in 2017
The Congress had won the Chotila assembly seat in the 2017 assembly elections. In this election, the Congress made the winner Makwana Rutwikbhai Makwana its candidate from this seat. He defeated BJP’s Jinabhai Darwalia by 23,000 votes. A total of 12 candidates were in the fray here. Apart from these two, the deposits of the remaining ten candidates were forfeited.
The performance of Congress in this seat has been better.
Congress may have been at number three in this election but before that it is catching up. In the four elections held before this election, Congress has won two and BJP has won two. While talking about the overall performance, 17 elections including three by-elections have been held here so far. Out of these 17 elections, BJP has won five times from here. Whereas, the Congress was successful in winning this seat eight times. Twice independents and once each Janata Dal and Swatantra Party have won here.
Talking about the last five elections, in 2017 the Congress won from here. At the same time, BJP candidates were successful in winning the 2012 elections and the by-elections in 2009 and 2010. In 2007, Popatbhai Savasibhai Jinjariya of INC won from here. Gingeria was successful in winning in 2002 as an independent candidate.
