Shatrughan Sinha and Rajesh Khanna were face to face in this by-election. Due to this election there was a rift in their friendship.
After staying away from films in 1990, superstar Rajesh Khanna entered politics. Rajiv Gandhi gave him ticket from New Delhi Lok Sabha seat in 1992. He faced the challenge of BJP’s Lal Krishna Advani. Rajesh Khanna had to face defeat, but Advani had contested elections from Gandhinagar also. In such a situation, he left the New Delhi seat and Rajesh Khanna got a second chance in the by-election. Despite the defeat, Rajesh got a lot of support. For this reason he contested elections again on this seat.
Friendship broke in elections
In the by-election, BJP gave ticket to Shatrughan Sinha against Rajesh Khanna. This made Rajesh angry and there was a rift in his friendship with Shatrughan. Rajesh Khanna won the by-election and remained MP of New Delhi till 1996. In 1996, he had to face defeat against Jagmohan by a margin of more than 50 thousand votes. Jagmohan was the first bureaucrat and the public voted for him wholeheartedly. After this, Rajesh became disillusioned with politics and distanced himself from it.
Rajesh Khanna did not agree
Rajesh Khanna, who is called the first superstar of Indian cinema, became so angry with Shatrughan Sinha in 1992 that he did not agree for the rest of his life. Shatrughan Sinha himself had told in an interview that he tried to convince Rajesh Khanna several times, but he did not agree. He won the election against Shatrughan by a margin of 25 thousand votes, but never forgave his friend.
