It would not be wrong to say that Chief Justice Chandrachud has law in his blood. His father Yashwant Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India and DY Chandrachud is the 50th Chief Justice. His mother’s name is Prabha and she was a singer in All India Radio. The full name of the Chief Justice is Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud and he was born on 11 November 1959 in Mumbai.

Chief Justice Chandrachud did his schooling from Delhi. He studied at St. Columbus School in Delhi. Talking about his college education, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Faculty of Law of Delhi University in 1982. Before this, in 1979, he had graduated in Maths and Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.

Chief Justice Chandrachud started his legal education from Harvard University. From here, he obtained an LLM degree in 1983. For this, he received a scholarship named ‘Inlaks’. Along with this, he was also awarded the Joseph H. Beale Award for securing the highest marks in the course ‘Conflict of Laws’.
This is how advocacy started
He stayed at Harvard till 1986 to complete his doctoral studies in judicial sciences. After completing his studies, he returned to the country and enrolled as an advocate in the Maharashtra Bar Council. From the beginning, he fought cases for people who were deprived of their rights for one reason or another. He fought many cases for women and the underprivileged.

Apart from advocacy, CJI DY Chandrachud was also involved in legal academics. He worked as a visiting professor at Bombay University from 1977 to 1988.
His career took off in 1988 and he became a senior advocate at the age of 38, a rank usually attained after the age of 40. Later, he was appointed as Additional Solicitor General of India. He held this position till 2000.
When did he become Chief Justice
After serving in the Bombay High Court for a decade, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on 31 October 2013. After this, he was made a judge in the Supreme Court on 13 May 2016 and in the year 2022, he became the Chief Justice of India.
