In an interview given to news agency ANI, Swaminathan said that the new variant has been described as ‘variant of interest’ and not ‘variant of concern’.   • So far, 26 cases of JN.1 sub-variant have been reported in India. Because of this, concerns have increased. Out of 26 cases, 19 cases have been reported in Goa, 4 in Rajasthan and one case each in Kerala, Delhi, Maharashtra.
  • All 19 cases of JN.1 sub-variant traced in Goa have been confirmed inactive. When genome sequencing of samples collected from patients was done, this variant came to light.
