Deepfake: Government issued advisory for social media companies, sought this report within 7 days


The government has issued another advisory yesterday on deepfakes. The central government has advised all social media companies to follow IT rules and has also asked people to inform about this. Especially companies have been warned about deepfakes and they have been asked to take action against wrong and inappropriate content. Citing Rule 3(1)(b) in the advisory, it has been said that if someone posts or shares inappropriate content on a social media platform, then legal action will be taken against him under this rule. The government has asked social media companies to pay more attention to misinformation and deepfakes and to strictly follow all the rules.

Apart from this, the IT Ministry has asked for ‘Action Taken cum Status Report’ from all social media companies within 7 days. The advisory sent on Tuesday asked social media companies and internet intermediaries to follow rules prohibiting the hosting, sharing of child sexual abuse material, pornographic material and allowing illegal loan apps. Also, in this advisory, social media companies have been asked to take additional measures to allow any advertisement of illegal loan and betting apps so that the common people do not fall into their trap.
