Every three minutes a person dies due to severe head injury in the country. These deaths can be prevented. To reduce such accidents, the Department of Neurosurgery of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi has started a campaign. Under this, people will be informed about road safety and prevention of head injury due to fall from height.

AIIMS Neurosurgeon Dr. Deepak Gupta said that AIIMS has started Brain Injury Prevention Initiative. Under this, people will be motivated to use seat belts, airbags, helmets to avoid road accidents. Along with this, awareness will be done for safe balcony, barricading and others to prevent accidents due to falling from height.

Let us tell you that serious injuries are registered every year in India. Two-wheeler road traffic accidents account for 25 per cent of the 1,50,000 head injury deaths in the country every year. Wearing a helmet in such incidents reduces the risk of death and head injury by 50-60%. Riders without helmets (women) recorded twice as many deaths as riders wearing helmets.

There has been a 16 per cent drop in the death of a patient wearing a helmet who reached the hospital after a road accident. Along with this, the injuries of cervical spine have also reduced.
