Cancer patients will soon be able to get advance radiotherapy facility at Lady Hardinge Hospital. So far, patients have to approach the Central Government’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi for this facility. The hospital has a cancer department, but due to lack of facilities, patients are referred to Safdarjung, AIIMS and other hospitals. In view of the increasing number of patients, Lady Hardinge Hospital has tied up with the Central Government.

Dr. Subhash Giri, Director, Lady Hardinge Medical College has signed agreement with HLL-HITES in the presence of Special Secretary to Union Health Secretary for procurement of medical equipment worth about Rs.78 crores. In this regard, Dr. Subhash Giri said that under the agreement, two linear accelerator machines will be installed for the treatment of cancer patients. In their absence, patients are referred to another hospital for radiotherapy.

Apart from this, an MRI and a CT scan machine will also come for cancer detection. He said that it is our estimate that the hospital will get this facility in this year itself. After the arrival of City Scan and MRI machine in Lady Hardinge Hospital, the speed of investigation will be doubled. Right now there is only one machine in the hospital, which remains faulty many times. After the arrival of the new machine, patients of departments other than cancer will also not have to wait for examination. Along with this, the speed of investigation will also increase.

Advance Linear Accelerator Machine

The linear accelerator machine is one of the state-of-the-art machines in cancer treatment. Through this, radiotherapy can be given directly on the affected part of the patient’s body. In Delhi, this facility is currently available only in the AIIMS Hospital of the Central Government. If the doctors agree, these machines can be installed in Lady Hardinge’s radiology department.

Thousands of patients will be benefited

Thousands of patients will be benefitted after the commencement of radiotherapy facility for cancer patients at Lady Hardinge Hospital. The hospital receives thousands of patients daily in various departments. Every week hundreds of these patients are referred to the oncology department of the hospital after showing signs of cancer. Patients are referred to other hospitals for cancer treatment after it becomes clear after investigation. After the facility starts, they will be able to get the facility in the hospital itself.
