While presiding over the 5th meeting of the State Level Committee of National Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) on Thursday, the Lieutenant Governor ordered the officers to take strict steps to make Delhi drug free. He said that action should be taken by identifying hotspots to crack down on drug peddlers around educational institutions.

If any property is used in drug smuggling, it should be sealed and demolished. Along with this, e-pledge against drugs will also have to be taken from the students for admission in school-college. E-oath will also be mandatory for the license of restaurants, pubs and hotels. All the agencies will have to work in mission mode to completely eliminate the drug trade.

He said that there is a need for active participation of all the agencies of the Central and State Governments in order to completely end the business of drug smuggling in Delhi. Drug trafficking is not only a crime, but it is part of an international conspiracy to weaken the country. He identified the hotspots and directed the concerned agencies to end the drug trade at all costs.

Specially asked to curb the activities of drugs around schools and colleges, so that the youth do not fall prey to drugs. Giving strict instructions to the Delhi Police, he said that action should be taken against drug peddlers by raiding paan shops and kiosks-street vendors in areas near schools and colleges in the capital. In order to end the drug mafia, the Lieutenant Governor asked the concerned agencies, including the police, to seal and demolish any such building from where drug trade is going on. Along with this, the transport department should immediately cancel the permit after identifying the vehicles from which drug smuggling is being done.

Licenses of restaurants, pubs and hotels will be canceled

The Lieutenant Governor has directed the Chief Secretary to make it mandatory for applicants to take e-pledge i.e. online oath against drugs at the time of admission in all universities, colleges and schools under the Delhi government. E-pledge will also be mandatory for restaurant, pub and hotel owners. Instructions have been given to other agencies including the Excise Department to make this a mandatory rule. If the involvement of any kind of drugs is found at these places, the license will be cancelled.

Effective coordination between police, NCB and ED is necessary

The Lt Governor called for effective coordination between Police, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Enforcement Directorate to deal with NDPS cases, so that large money transactions are immediately handed over to the ED. He has also directed the Delhi Police to keep notorious and habitual offenders in drug custody for a long time and strictly implement the PITNDPS Act. Under this act, one can be kept in custody for one year.

Manager will be responsible for shelter home

LG said that the shelter home and surroundings are becoming a new hub of drugs. He directed the officers of the Social Welfare Department to keep an eye on the situation continuously. Arrange training for the managers of the shelter home, so that they can easily identify suspicious activities. People who are addicted to drugs in the shelter home will also be able to identify them. Also, the managers will be responsible for drug related incidents in these shelter homes.

Training will be given to 85 thousand postmen

The LG has also urged the Department of Posts to train 85,000 postmen to identify drug smugglers and drug addicts. In many cases, it has been seen that drugs are supplied from remote post offices under the guise of post or parcel. The LG has stressed on sharing of details of people involved in drug trafficking and drug crime among agencies, so that this crime can be monitored and better enforced.
