Delhi: Fake Health Ministry Official Arrested For Duping Rs 15 Crore

The Economic Offenses Wing of Delhi Police has arrested a fake official of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The accused, along with his accomplices, had duped six people of Rs 15 crore on the pretext of providing work orders from the ministry for transportation of Covid vaccine to different states. In this case, the police have already arrested five accused including two gang leaders Harman Sabharwal, Govind Tulsyan. The arrested fake officer has been identified as Umesh Batra (49).

On April 13 this year, several complainants, including Sunil Kaushik, filed a complaint of cheating and swindling at the Economic Offenses Wing, alleging that they were duped of Rs 3-4 crore on the pretext of getting work orders for transportation of Covid vaccine. The fraud was perpetrated in the same manner with all the complainants. They claimed that they were made to sit inside the conference room of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to execute the work order to transport the Covid vaccine, but later all the accused turned out to be fake. After preliminary investigation, the branch registered a case. In the investigation, it was found that 6 complainants were cheated of Rs 15 crore.

The accused came in contact with the complainant in May 2021. He claimed to have managed the work order received from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the transportation of the Covid vaccine. To win the trust of the victims, the accused brought them to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which is located in the Nirman Bhawan complex. The accused described himself as an officer of the ministry. He took the signatures of the complainants on forged work orders. 15 crores were taken from their bank accounts in lieu of forged work orders. The police took the details of the bank accounts of the alleged accused and analyzed them.

After investigation, the police team identified the accused and arrested five accused Harman Sabharwal, Govind Tulsian, Diprana Tiwari, Trilok Singh and Mrityunjay Roy in August-September 2022. During interrogation, it was revealed that Umesh Batra used to take the victims to the conference room posing as an officer. Who was absconding along with other accused Praful Kumar Nayak and Pawan Kumar Rai. The police sent him a notice to join the investigation. The accused Umesh Batra was absconding from his house and police were continuously raiding in search of the accused. On December 21, Umesh Batra surrendered before the court. The police arrested him with the permission of the court.
