An 85-year-old man was charred to death in a fire that broke out in a flat on the seventh floor of CGHS Mass Apartments in Sector-10, Dwarka on Friday night. The elders lived with their daughter and son-in-law. At the time of the incident, the daughter and son-in-law had gone to the market and the elderly were alone in the house. He was unable to walk. Seeing the flames coming out of the flat, people informed the police and fire department about the incident.

Police and fire brigade personnel controlled the fire and took the elderly out in scorched condition and rushed him to the hospital, where the doctors declared him dead. In the initial investigation, it has come to light that the AC caught fire due to short circuit. The Police is investigating. The deceased has been identified as Sadhan Chandra. He was retired from Public Sector Undertaking.

Police officials said that at 8.30 pm on Friday night, information about the fire was received in flat number 706 located on the seventh floor of the society. As soon as the information was received, nine fire tenders along with the police reached. Earlier, the people of the society tried to douse the fire at their own level. After reaching there, the fire brigade personnel switched off the power supply and then reached the flat with small fire extinguishers.

After controlling the fire, the fire personnel found an elderly person lying between the kitchen and the hall in a scorched condition. Fire brigade personnel took him to Indira Gandhi Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Police officials said that the flames were going up to the eighth floor. Police feared that after the fire, the elderly fainted due to inhaling smoke and later got scorched due to the fire in the curtains and household items on the window.

Difficulty in reaching fire engines from parking lot

Fire brigade personnel said that due to parking of cars in the society premises, fire tenders had to struggle to reach the spot. There is parking in a large part of the society, where people had parked their cars diagonally. According to fire brigade personnel, several cars were removed and reached the spot.
