Expansion

For the first time in North India, doctors in Delhi have saved the life of a patient from Kyrgyzstan through auto liver transplant. The patient was suffering from stomach problems for a long time. Doctors removed the damaged part of his liver and transplanted a healthy part of his own liver during the operation which lasted for about eight hours.

Dr. Vivek Vij, Senior, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Okhla, Delhi, said that the 35-year-old female patient was discharged from the hospital on the 8th day after surgery. He told that the female patient had a parasitic infection called Echnococci multi locularis. This is a condition in which a tumor slowly starts growing in the patient’s liver and starts getting damaged. About 75 percent of the liver of this patient was damaged. Liver transplant is the only treatment option left in such cases.

Dr. Vij told that the liver and other nearby organs of the female patient had also suffered a lot of damage. In such a situation, the doctors decided to do his auto-liver transplant. The patient also did not have to be given any type of immunosuppressant drugs, which are usually required after a transplant.

According to doctors, Echanococci multi locularis is a complex medical condition with a recurrence rate of 10%. If it is not treated on time and properly, there is a risk of infection spreading to the lungs, kidneys, large blood vessels and even the intestines of the patient.

Only second case in the country, experience-expertise required

According to doctors, in auto liver transplant, the damaged liver of the patient is removed and its healthy part is implanted. A major advantage of this is that after surgery the patient does not have to be put on immunosuppressant drugs. This is the second case in the country. Such matters require considerable experience and expertise.
