The cyber cell police of the North-Eastern district has busted a gang of fraudsters on the pretext of renewal of the insurance policy. The police have arrested four fraudsters of the gang. Police have recovered 7 mobile phones, 10 sims, 7 ATM cards, 11 check books and a passbook from the possession of the accused. Initial investigation has revealed that the accused have cheated lakhs from more than 50 people in the last six months. The arrested accused have been identified as Shahdara resident Rahul Sharma, New Ashok Nagar resident Amir Ansari, Noida Sector 66 resident Kalim Ansari and Nikhil Pal.
The police officer said that on June 22, a person gave a complaint of cheating in the cyber cell. He told that his PNB-MetLife insurance policy had been closed due to non-payment of premium. After about 6 months I got a call from a person who claimed to have paid the premium and got the policy renewed.
The accused impersonated himself as an official of PNB-MetLife and also sent the policy papers on the email of the complainant. The accused took Rs 1.94 lakh from the victim in three instalments. The accused asked the victim to deposit Rs 2.50 lakh to get more benefits. The victim got suspicious. On not depositing the money, the accused stopped picking up the phone of the victim. The victim realized that he had been duped.
The police team led by Inspector Vijay Kumar collected information about the beneficiary’s account details and conducted raids in Noida, UP including other areas on the basis of technical surveillance. After this, the police arrested four accused on the basis of local information.
Learned tricks while working in an insurance company
During interrogation, the police came to know that Rahul Sharma and Amir Ansari were the main ringleaders. Both worked in a private insurance company. From where he learned the technique of issuing insurance policies and collected data. Both became friends while working and then started their work after leaving the job. They took a flat on rent in Vaishali, Ghaziabad, UP for Rs.12,000. He used to call on the numbers of people looking for insurance or those who already have some insurance policies from reputed companies. They used to introduce themselves as PNB-MetLife officials. He also used to send fake policy papers over email.
