Gangsters now running gangs from Tihar Jail is going to be a thing of the past. The jail administration has started the work of installing 15 jammers to make inmates’ mobile boxes. Gangsters used to carry out serious incidents by talking to their gang members outside using hidden mobiles in the jail. Even from jail itself, he used to extort money from the businessmen by threatening them through phone. While in jail, he used to plot the murder of another gangster.
Amar Ujala had recently exposed the continuous talking of prisoners on the phone while in jail. After that, the jail administration swung into action and decided to install 15 jammers. The Tihar Jail administration had installed three jammers to prevent the use of phones by the inmates. Two jammers are engaged in Tihar Jail while one is engaged in Mandoli Jail. Despite this, the prisoners were continuously using the phone. This year the administration has recovered more than 700 phones from the jail.
The jail administration started an inquiry on how the prisoners are using the phones in the jail. It was revealed in the investigation that despite the presence of jammers, there were some black spots, taking advantage of which the prisoners were able to defeat the jammers. Jail officials said that on checking, 40 such black spots were found where jammers were not working and inmates were secretly using mobile phones from there. Identifying 40 such black spots, the jail administration has decided to install jammers here. The jail administration has purchased 15 jammers from Bharat Electronics Limited.
Non linear junction detector will help in detecting phone or electric device
Jail officials said that 10 non-linear junction detectors are being procured, which will help in locating any phone or electronics device usually hidden inside the walls or floor of the jail. Jail officials said that technical agencies were contacted to install jammers at the black spots. Many agencies showed interest and agreed to install jammers.
The company will be fined if the jammer does not work
Sources say that the company, which has been given the responsibility of installing the jammer, has been told clearly that after installing the jammer, no network should work in the jail. If the network of any telecom company reaches even after the jammer is installed, then they have to be prepared for financial fine as well as other action. This will also include provisions like ban on participating in any tender in future.
How were the phones of the prisoners working?
Initial investigation revealed that the jammers currently installed in jails are of low capacity. Their range is from one cell to one ward. There are two jammers in Tihar and one in Mandoli. Investigation has also revealed that there are residential colonies less than 20 meters away from the outer walls of Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli jail premises. In many places in these colonies, mobile towers are also installed within 50 meters of the jail wall. From here the signals reach the jail premises easily. Jail sources say that if the jail administration uses high capacity jammers in the jail, then it will affect the colonies around the jail and they will have problems in the mobile network.
