New Delhi. Boats will soon be seen plying in the Yamuna between Signature Bridge and ITO Barrage in Delhi. On the initiative of the Lieutenant Governor, the work boat launched in Yamuna completed its maiden voyage between Signature Bridge and ITO Barrage. Earlier, the plan could not be realized due to lack of depth in Yamuna, floating dirt, debris and other problems.

In view of this problem, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena started work on the restoration of Yamuna on the orders of the Supreme Court and the NGT. Under this, the Indian Navy’s work boat was successfully operated for the first time from Signature Bridge to ITO Barrage on Saturday. Its distance is about 11 kilometers. This work boat has recently been brought from Kochi.

Explain that as the chairman of the appointed high level committee of NGT, the Lieutenant Governor is actively monitoring the rejuvenation of Yamuna. In this campaign, he also added the local people. In this direction, it was envisaged to operate the boat as a means of transport in a limited part of the Yamuna. After personally inspecting the successful cleaning of Yamuna and its flood plains, between Signature Bridge and ITO Barrage, the Lt Governor had officially requisitioned a boat from the Navy and decided to start the work.

Will run at a speed of 25 km

The Navy work boat is 11 meters long and 1.7 meters wide and weighs 12 tonnes. The boat can sail at a speed of 14 knots with a capacity of 35 passengers. It was brought by road from Kochi on 3 June 2023 and erected at Signature Bridge Jetty. Subsequently, a detailed hydro-graphic survey conducted by a special team of the Navy from Karwar and Dehradun revealed that the depth of the river in some stretches was less than the required 1.7 metres. Thereafter, locally available equipment was deployed in the identified area for desilting and a channel of about 30 meters wide was prepared by June 20. The finalization of the channel was completed by June 22 and the trial run of the work boat was done on Saturday morning. Initially the trial run was planned only for a distance of 3 km of Signature Bridge and Boat Club. Later it was decided to take it to ITO Barrage. The boat has been successfully moored on a special jetty made for it at ITO Barrage.

operations will start soon

Boat operations will be continued and further detailed navigation trials will be carried out in Yamuna so that proper channels can be determined for the boats carrying passengers and goods and they can run successfully in the near future.
