Delhi: Only 6 percent beds in AIIMS emergency, need for referral policy

AIIMS Delhi

Only six per cent of the patients who come to AIIMS for emergency treatment on a daily basis get beds, while many beds remain vacant in the nearby hospitals. On an average 866 patients come daily, but only 50 (5.7 per cent) get a bed. Due to lack of proper referral policy in Delhi-NCR hospitals, patients have to suffer, while many patients wander in hospitals due to lack of beds.

To solve this problem, on Friday, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena held a high-level meeting with AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas, Chief Secretary, Chairman of NDMC, Principal Secretary Health, Director General of Health Directorate and Medical Directors of other hospitals.

In this, the Lt Governor directed that a formal system be developed for referral of patients between the hospitals in AIIMS and Delhi. With this, vacant beds in hospitals can be used for the treatment of patients. With the help of this policy, AIIMS will be able to shift stable patients to other hospitals for treatment. With this, other patients will also not have to visit the hospital for beds.

Pilot project will start in two hospitals

As a pilot project, the facility of referral policy will be ready in Delhi Government’s Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka and NDMC’s Charak Palika Hospital next month. These hospitals will be linked with AIIMS. AIIMS will provide expertise and critical infrastructure to these hospitals. At the same time, AIIMS will be able to send patients to these hospitals if there is a shortage of beds. Gradually, AIIMS will be linked with other government hospitals and health care centers as partner institutions. Its objective is to develop a super-specialty hospital in Delhi.

Hospitals prepare centralized dashboard: The LG has ordered that the health department analyze the shortage of available beds in all its major hospitals within a week. Also, develop a centralized dashboard where the availability of beds in all government hospitals of Delhi is available on real time basis.

robotic surgery training

AIIMS will provide training in robotic surgery to improve the quality of surgeries performed in the country’s hospitals including the capital. With this, AIIMS will set up a robotic surgery training facility in its institute in six months. Professor Amlesh Seth, Head of the Department of Urology, has been entrusted with the responsibility of developing this facility. The order issued by AIIMS Director Dr M Srinivas said that AIIMS has been a leader in patient care, teaching and research.

Quality will improve with the help of robotic surgery. AIIMS started this facility long back. The hospital has a talent pool of faculty using robotic surgical systems over the years. Adequate number of Master Trainers are available at AIIMS New Delhi. In such a situation, there is a need to train the doctors of AIIMS and other health facilities.
