After breaking the spinal cord, the patient loses the hope of standing or walking. Such patients no longer need to despair. An electrical device has been prepared for these patients, which will work like a brain. The waves coming out of this will work to make the lower limb of the paralyzed body run again. This device will be operated with the help of a programmer, which will be with the patient.

Spine doctors have developed the Spinal Epidural Electrical Stimulation (SEES) device, which was earlier being used on animals. The study was presented at the 22nd International Spine and Spinal Injury Conference organized by the Spinal Cord Society and the Indian Spinal Injury Center. In relation to this device, Dr. HS Chhabra, president of the Spinal Card Society, told that after surgery, the device is implanted in the abdomen.

Artificial arteries coming out of this device are attached to the spinal cord. The other end of these artificial arteries is connected to the paralyzed body part through the device. After receiving the wave from the device, the paralyzed limb works as before. However, the device has not been proven to aid neurological recovery.

Tested on five patients
Dr. Chhabra said that this device was tested for about three months on five patients who suffered spinal fractures in an accident. The clinical trial conducted in the first and second phase of the trial showed considerable success and significant improvement was observed in the patient’s lower back. This study has been approved by the Institute Ethics Committee and Research Review Committee. Also it has been registered in the clinical trial registry of the country.

This is how the device works
The device is pre-programmed to move the lower body. The controller of this device is with the patient. If the patient instructs the said programmer to lift the leg, then that message goes to the lower part of the body through artificial arteries and the leg rises. Explain that the normal person gets the message to work from the mind. This message travels through the arteries to the lower part of the body. Here the message goes through the device instead of the brain.

Mapping is done before installing the device
The mapping of the paralyzed body takes place before the device is implanted in the body. During this, it is seen which muscles can work in the said part of the paralyzed body. The said organ is operated by connecting artificial arteries to those parts.
