According to Shivpuran, Lord Vishnu killed the demon Shankhasura on Shukla Ekadashi of Bhadrapada month. The war between Lord Vishnu and the demon Shankhasura continued for a long time. After the war ended, Lord Vishnu became very tired. Then he came to Kshirsagar and slept. He handed over the responsibility of creation to Lord Shiva.

Puja method on Dev Uthani Ekadashi (Dev Uthani Ekadashi Puja Vidhi)
- On Devuthani Ekadashi, wake up before sunrise, clean the house, take bath, sprinkle Ganga water in the house. Tie ‘Vandanwar’ at the door and make the shape of Lord Vishnu’s feet in the courtyard.
- Offer water to Tulsi and Peepal, worship and light a lamp. Take a resolution to fast while meditating on Lord Vishnu.
- Wake up Lord Vishnu while chanting mantras by blowing conch, bell-gong etc., anoint Lord Vishnu with pure water and Panchamrit.
- Offer Abeer, Gulal, Chandan, Akshat, flowers, Tulsi and other puja materials. Get darshan of incense and lamp. Offer fruits and sweets, perform aarti and distribute prasad.
- If you are not able to get the marriage of Tulsi and Shaligram done on this day, then worship Tulsi normally. Recite Tulsi Namashtak. Chant Tulsi Namashtak i.e. the mantra containing the eight names of Tulsi.
