Devotees flocked to the temple from early morning on Somvati Amavasya, a day before the New Year. Thousands of devotees reached the temple two hours before the doors opened and sat at the door and waited for the doors of the temple to open amid bhajans and kirtans. There was a huge crowd of devotees in and around the temple. There was a queue of devotees from the entry road of the temple to the main street and the railing in Banke Bihari market till Vidyapeeth.

As soon as the doors opened, a stream of devotees entered the temple. Within no time the temple complex was filled with devotees. Amidst the pressure and push of the crowd, the devotees had darshan of Thakur Banke Bihari. To reduce the pressure of the crowd in the temple, the police put up barricades at Vidyapeeth Square, the main street and then on the stairs in front of the temple gate and sent the devotees towards the temple intermittently at intervals of some time.

Here, on Somvati Amavasya, devotees did Panchkosi Parikrama of the city while some devotees did Dandavati Parikrama, but despite the ban, the police failed to stop the movement of vehicles on the parikrama route.

Prahlad Vallabh Goswami, sevayat of Thakur Banke Bihari Temple, said that his new year should be pleasant and joyful. With this wish, about one and a half to two lakh devotees are coming every day to have darshan of Thakur Banke Bihari Maharaj. Since Tuesday is the last day of the year, the number of devotees will be at its peak.
