Diwali 2024 Celebration: This year the festival of Diwali will not be of 5 days but will be of 6 days. Astrologer Pandit Saurabh Ganesh Sharma told that the Amavasya date of Kartik month will be for two days, 31 October and 1 November. For this reason, Deepotsav will last not 5 but 6 days.

Kartik Amavasya will start from the afternoon of 31st October and will last till the evening of the next day i.e. 1st November. There is a tradition of performing Lakshmi Puja on the night of Kartik Amavasya. Therefore, Lakshmi Puja should be performed on the night of 31st October, because Amavasya Tithi will be on the night of 31st and Pratipada Tithi of Krishna Paksha will be on the night of 1st November.

Diwali 2024: Deepotsav will be celebrated for not five but six days

2. Narak Chaturdashi- Wednesday, 30 October 2024

Dhanteras on 29 October (Dhanteras 2024)

The five-day festival of lights starts from the day of Dhanteras, which this year is on Tuesday 29th October. Deepotsav will start from this day and Dhanteras will be celebrated. Lord Dhanvantari Jayanti is also celebrated on Dhanteras. There is a tradition of lighting a lamp (Yam Deep) for Yamraj on the night of Dhanteras. Goddess Lakshmi is also worshiped on this date.

Roop Chaudas 2024 on 30th October

Roop Chaudas will be celebrated on 30th October. It is also called Narak Chaturdashi. There is a tradition of applying Ubtan on this day. It is believed that on this date Lord Shri Krishna had killed the demon named Narakasura. For this reason this festival is called Narak Chaturdashi.

Lakshmi Puja on 31st October (Diwali Laxmi Puja 2024)

Special worship of Goddess Lakshmi will be done on the night of 31st October. It is believed that the gods and demons together churned the ocean and from this churning, Goddess Lakshmi appeared on the new moon day of Kartik month. Goddess Lakshmi had chosen Lord Vishnu. Along with this, another belief is that on this date Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after ending 14 years of exile and killing Ravana. Then people lit lamps to welcome Ram.

Kartik Amavasya of bathing and donation on 1st November (Kartik Amavasya 2024)

There will be Amavasya of Kartik month on 1st November also. On this day one should bathe in holy rivers and do charity. Also meditate on incense for the ancestors in the afternoon. Kartik Amavasya Tithi will end in the evening of this day.

Govardhan Puja on 2nd November (Govardhan Puja 2024)

Kartik Shukla Pratipada i.e. Govardhan Puja festival is on 2nd November. There is a tradition of worshiping Govardhan Mountain located in Mathura on this day. In Dwapar Yuga, Shri Krishna had asked the people of Braj to worship Govardhan Mountain and not Kansa, since then this mountain is being worshipped.

Bhai Dooj on 3rd November (Bhai Dooj 2024)

Bhai Dooj is on 3rd November. This festival is related to Yamuna and Yamraj. It is believed that on this date Yamraj visits his sister Yamuna. Yamuna provides food to Yamraj. It is believed that on this date, the brother who eats food at his sister’s house, by the grace of Yamraj-Yamuna, all his problems are removed and luck favors him.
