According to researchers at the University of Westminster, a 90-minute horror movie can help eliminate about 150 calories. 150 calories is equivalent to a quick jog or a 30-minute walk.

Let us tell you that the study funded by movie rental company LoveFilm included ten participants. Who watched ten different horror movies wearing 3D glasses. After this, when their heart rate, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output were measured, the researchers found that watching a horror movie increased the heart rate and metabolism of the participants. As a result, watching the movie burned more calories. The number of calories burned varies depending on the movie and the person, but a 90-minute horror movie burns an average of 150 calories.

Horror movies increase adrenaline levels

The study also ranked the top 10 horror movies in terms of calorie burn. The Shining (184 calories), Jaws (161 calories), and The Exorcist (158 calories) were the top three movies. These movies repeatedly featured shocking scenes, which increased the audience’s heart rate and adrenaline levels. Expert Dr. Richard Mackenzie explained that this fast-process releases adrenaline, which is produced during a short period of intense stress or in this case fear. Which works to reduce appetite, increase basal metabolic rate and reduce calorie intake.
