Iran President Election: The seat of the President has become vacant after the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. In such a situation, questions are being raised about who will get the command of the President and when the elections will be held. The Constitution of Iran says that if an Iranian President dies while in office, then the Vice President has to take over as acting President to run the government. However, for this, approval will have to be taken from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, because without his approval this will not be possible. The Supreme Leader is considered supreme in Iran. The Supreme Leader also commands the Guardian Council, the organization that monitors the electoral process in Iran. The leader who wins the election is appointed President only after the signature of the Supreme Leader.
How are elections held in Iran?
Like France, elections are held in Iran also every 4 years. The last election was held in 2021, so the next election was proposed in 2025, but after the death of Ibrahim Raisi, elections will be held soon, because the Vice President will have the right to hold power only for 50 days. Within these 50 days, a new President will have to be elected for Iran.
Whose responsibility is it?
In India, the responsibility of conducting elections rests with the Election Commission, but in Iran, the Guardian Council conducts the elections. It is a panel of 6 Islamic judges and 6 senior clerics under the supervision of the Supreme Leader. This panel examines the candidates willing to contest elections on technical and ideological grounds. This includes the level of education, commitment to Islam, the Constitution and the values of the Islamic Republic.
Reports indicate that the Guardian Council never allowed women to contest presidential elections. In the last election, 592 candidates had nominated for the post of President, but the Guardian Council allowed only 7 candidates to contest the election and rejected the rest of the names. These include Ibrahim Raisi, Mohsin Rezai, Saeed Jalili, reformist leaders Mohsen Mehralizadeh, Abdul Nasser Himmati, Ali Reza Jaqani and Amir Hussein Qazizade Hashmi, some of whom later withdrew their names.
290 members are elected in the Iranian Parliament.
Every 4 years, 290 members of the Iranian Parliament are elected. Parliament prepares draft laws and approves the country’s budget. However, Parliament is controlled by the Guardian Council, which is an influential body. It examines all laws from the perspective of Sharia or Islamic law and can repeal the law. Half of the members of the council are appointed by the Supreme Leader. The Supreme Leader appoints the head of the judiciary.
You will be able to vote as soon as you turn 18 years old
In Iran, all Iranians over the age of 18 can vote. The rule is also that if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the votes in the first phase, then a run-off election is conducted. That is, if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the votes in the first phase of voting, then in the second phase, votes are cast for the two candidates who got the most votes. After this the ballot papers are counted manually. After that the name of the winner is declared.
Without the Supreme Leader, not even a leaf can move.
Whatever happens in Iran, it happens only as per the wish of the Supreme Leader. Even though there is a President and Vice President in Iran, power control rests only with the Supreme Leader. The Supreme Leader’s stamp is also placed on the names of the candidates in the presidential elections. In Iran, only that person becomes a candidate for the post of President, who is approved by the Council of Guardians. In Iran, whether it is domestic policy, foreign policy or general policy, the Supreme Leader is responsible for everything. The command of all the armies of Iran rests with the Supreme Leader. The Supreme Leader is the only person who can declare war or declare peace. If we talk about the most powerful person in Iran at present, then he is Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, he is the supreme leader of the country from 1989 till now. The Supreme Leader controls the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps. They also choose the head of the judiciary. The President is the top official of Iran and the second most powerful person after the Supreme Leader.
