Election Commission: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi to act on the issues raised by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding voter list revision in the National Capital Territory (NCT). Instructed to do so. The Commission has advised Delhi election officials to carefully follow the process of deleting and modifying the voter list.
BJP expressed concern over illegal immigrants and ‘ghost’ voters
The Election Commission has also sent a copy of BJP’s complaint to the Delhi CEO requesting deletion of names of illegal and temporary migrants as well as ‘ghost’ voters during the Special Summary Amendment (SSR) 2025. The BJP has stressed on ensuring that transparency and accuracy is maintained in the voter registration process.
AAP has warned the Commission that the party is worried about the “danger of large-scale voter removal” in Delhi. AAP alleges that BJP is running a campaign to target AAP supporters and remove their names from the voter list. Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and other leaders raised the issue with the Election Commission.
Commission’s emphasis on transparency and accountability
The Election Commission clarified that legal provisions and guidelines should be strictly followed during the voter list revision process. In particular, if more than 2 percent of voters at a polling station are removed or more than five objections are filed by a person, then verification by the Election Registration Officer (ERO) is mandatory.
Apart from this, the Commission has directed to regularly share the list of claims and objections with all political parties and upload these lists on the website of the CEO of Delhi. This step has been taken to ensure transparency in the process.
Effort to strengthen the process of improving voter list
The Election Commission also said that the process of resolving objections should be transparent. The Commission has directed the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi that there should not be any irregularities during the voter list revision and all political parties should have confidence in the process. The purpose of this effort is to maintain the integrity and credibility of the electoral system.
