Elections for all 12 ward committees of Delhi Municipal Corporation will be held on September 4. In this regard, the corporation issued a notification on Wednesday. Councillors will be able to file nomination papers for the posts of chairman, vice-chairman and permanent committee members of ward committees till August 30. Nominations can be withdrawn before the voting process begins. The corporation secretary’s office will scrutinize the nomination papers on August 30 itself.
MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar approved the election program of ward committees. After this, the corporation secretary issued the notification. He first informed the leaders of Aam Aadmi Party, BJP and Congress councilor groups about this. He also sent the program of election of ward committees to each councilor. Elections of ward committees are being held after about one and a half years. After the Supreme Court order came in the matter of nomination of councilors in MCD by the Lieutenant Governor, the Mayor had ordered the corporation secretary to hold elections of ward committees last week.
AAP and BJP leaders made strategy
After the notification was issued, AAP and BJP councillors started making strategies. AAP’s MCD in-charge and MLA Durgesh Pathak held a meeting with some senior councillors. It is being told that he took opinion regarding the names of councillors for the ward committees’ chairman, vice-chairman and permanent committee member. Apart from this, MCD leader of opposition and BJP councillor Raja Iqbal Singh talked to party leaders about contesting the ward committee elections. Both the parties are likely to file nomination papers on August 30 itself.
BJP ahead in seven and AAP in five ward committees
BJP has majority in seven out of 12 ward committees of MCD. BJP is ahead of Aam Aadmi Party in Narela, Najafgarh, Keshavpuram, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, Central and Civil Line Ward Committee. However, in Civil Line Ward Committee, BJP has only one more councillor than AAP. In such a situation, its path is not easy in this committee. In case of cancellation or cross vote of one councillor, this ward committee can slip out of its hands. Whereas, AAP has majority in Rohini, West, South, City-Sadar Paharganj and Karol Bagh Ward Committee.
