This research about wild African elephants was also published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution on June 10, 2024. According to the research, elephants learn to use personal names to address other elephants without imitating anyone. At the same time, other elephants also react while recognizing the call like a name.

The special sound that elephants use most often to call each other is a kind of rumbling. There are three categories of this rumbling. The first is to call a lost herd mate, the second is to greet another mate and the third is to take care of the children.

An elephant rumbles when it has to call its partner who is far away or out of sight. The second category is for greetings. This is used by elephants when another elephant is very close. Apart from this, the third rumble is for care. This rumble is used by female elephants for the small children they are taking care of.
