Emergency: The upcoming film ‘Emergency’ directed and starring Kangana Ranaut has been surrounded by controversies for a long time. In fact, Sikh organizations including Shiromani Akali Dal have accused Kangana Ranaut’s film of portraying their community in a wrong way and tampering with historical facts. At the same time, the film has also not received a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). In such a situation, a hearing was held in the Bombay High Court today on this matter and the High Court has directed the CBFC to take a decision in this matter by September 25.
CBFC directed to take decision by September 25
According to PTI, the Bombay High Court on Thursday said that creative freedom and freedom of expression cannot be curtailed and the censor board cannot refuse to give a certificate to a film just because there is a possibility of law and order problem. The bench of Justice BP Colabawala and Justice Firdosh Pooniwala also expressed displeasure with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for not taking a decision on issuing the certificate and ordered to take a decision by September 25.
In this it was asked whether CBFC thinks that people of this country are so innocent that they believe everything shown in the film.
What did the petitioner say?
The petitioner had claimed that the CBFC was delaying the issuance of certificate to the film due to political reasons. On this, the High Court said that the film’s co-producer Kangana Ranaut herself is a sitting BJP MP and questioned whether the ruling party was working against its own MP.
Let us tell you that apart from playing the lead role of former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi in the film, the director and co-producer of the film Kangana Ranaut had earlier this week accused the CBFC of withholding the certificate to delay the release.
The court ordered the CBFC to take a decision
At the same time, the bench said, “You (CBFC) have to take a decision one way or the other. You should have the courage to say that this film cannot be released, at least then we will appreciate your courage. We do not want the CBFC to sit in the fence.” The court was hearing a petition filed by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, seeking a direction to the CBFC to issue a certificate for the film “Emergency”.
‘Emergency’ was to be released on 6 September
Let us tell you that this biographical drama was earlier scheduled to release on 6 September but could not be released due to not getting a certificate from the censor board. This film has been jointly produced by Kangana’s Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios. Apart from Kangana Ranaut, Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahila Chaudhary and Milind Soman have played important roles in the film.
