When was EVM used for the first time?
According to the report published on the official website of the Election Commission, the electronic voting machine was used for the first time in India in the year 1982 in the general elections of Kerala. However, the Supreme Court struck down this election due to the absence of any specific law prescribing its use. After this, EVMs were used in the year 1998 in 25 assembly constituencies of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi.
How does EVM work without electricity?
No electricity is required to run the electronic voting machine. It runs on a 6 volt alkaline battery. It has been made in such a way that it can be used even in places where there is no electricity. At the same time, a maximum of 3840 votes can be recorded in an EVM machine. Whereas, a total of 64 candidates’ names can be included in an EVM machine.
How much does an EVM machine cost?
In the initial phase i.e. in the year 1990, when the EVM machine was purchased for the first time, its price (EVM Price) was around Rs.5500. After this, in the year 2014, when the EVM machine was ordered, the price of one machine was fixed at Rs 10,500.
