Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal was elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Kapil Sibal got 1066 votes in the elections held on Thursday (16 May). His nearest rival was senior lawyer Pradeep Rai, who got 689 votes. Kapil Sibal had contested this election after two decades. Before this, he had been SCBA President in 1995, 1997 and 2001.

What did Kapil Sibal say before the elections?

In an interview to Bar & Bench before the results were declared, Kapil Sibal had said, “Lawyers are there to maintain the rule of law. The purpose of a lawyer is to protect the Constitution… So if you join the Bar with political leanings, If you distribute it on that basis, you are not actually fulfilling your duty as a lawyer.”

Before being elected to the post of President of the Bar Association, Kapil Sibal had said, “There was no drinking water facility in the bar, I had made that arrangement. I had arranged for a railway centre to book tickets here. The canteen, Aarge Garg Library was established here by me. Whenever issues arise, we do what we have to do.”

Jairam Ramesh reacted

On Kapil Sibal being elected President of the Bar Association, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted and said, Kapil Sibal was elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association with an overwhelming majority. This is a major victory for liberal, secular, democratic and progressive forces. In the words of the outgoing Prime Minister, it is also a trailer of the changes that will come very soon at the national level.”
