Millions of couples around the world are struggling with the problem of infertility, due to which they are not able to conceive naturally. The special thing is that medical science has now progressed so much and has developed reproductive technology like in vitro fertilization i.e. IVF, with the help of which children can be produced easily.
Dr. Vaishali Sharma, MD, Senior Consultant Gynecologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon and Infertility Specialist at AIIMS, said, ‘IVF has brought a new revolution in the world of fertility treatment, which has raised hopes in the minds of those couples who are struggling to conceive. However, there are many factors to decide the right candidate for IVF, which need to be considered very carefully. Let us tell you what an ideal candidate is like for fertility treatment?’
Understand what IVF is?
In vitro fertilization is a fertility treatment in which eggs and sperm are taken out of the body and placed in a laboratory dish. According to Dr. Sharma, the embryo prepared in the laboratory dish is transferred to the uterus and a successful pregnancy is expected. IVF is recommended for couples who struggle with fertility problems. These include blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, ovulation disorders, endometriosis or unexplained infertility.
Who can undergo IVF?
Women who have blocked or damaged fallopian tubes can undergo IVF. In this process, an effective option for pregnancy is created by bypassing the fallopian tubes. In cases of male factor infertility, if the number of sperms of the male partner is low, there is a problem of sperm mobility or other problems, then IVF can prove to be very effective. According to Dr. Sharma, ‘Women who have problems like irregular ovulation or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also undergo IVF for pregnancy. Patients with severe endometriosis can also think about IVF. In this problem, the lining of the uterus is affected and fertility decreases. Apart from this, when the cause of infertility is not identified, IVF can also prove to be a good option.’
How effective is IVF?
It is true that IVF technology proves to be helpful for many people, but to know whether it is right for you, it is necessary to test many things. Age matters a lot in the success rate of IVF. Generally, the chances of IVF being successful are very high in young women. Actually, the quality and quantity of eggs decreases with age. In such a situation, it is important to pay attention to age while choosing the ideal candidate for IVF.
