Film Review ‘Clap’: The story of any sports film is the same

Film Review ‘Clap’: Films have been made on many players like Mary Kom, MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Milkha Singh, Sandeep Singh and now films are being made on players like Mithali Raj, Praveen Tambe, Jhulan Goswami. In the last 5-6 years, there has been a flood of films made on sports. Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma in Hindi and actors like Nani, Kiccha Sudeep, Keerthy Suresh have worked in Tamil-Telugu language and hit sports films. There is an irony in the story of sports films that lack of innovation can be seen in it.

A talented player who is not able to give his best due to any reason and goes into the pit of despair, with the help of a coach or lover, he gets a chance to show his talent again and he enters the field once again with full preparation. And shoots down the opponents’ schemes, once again hitting the pinnacle. Sometimes romance, sometimes difficult situations and sometimes villainous rivals put obstacles in his life but in the end the main artist wins.

There is no hope of getting anything new for the audience and such films run only because of good promotion. In this episode, a few days back on Sony Liv, the film “Clap” made in both Tamil and Telugu languages has been released, whose story is very similar to other sports films but there is a small twist. The film instills in children the feeling of victory and the habit of running away from hopelessness and despair, hence it is worth watching.

Ravi Raja Pinishetty is counted among the successful directors of Tamil and Telugu cinema, his son Adi, who has been seen as hero in Tamil and Telugu films, is the hero of this film Clap. The film begins with his childhood where his father Prakash Raj wants to make him a great athlete. Under the direction of his father, he becomes a successful runner and continues to win many tournaments. Prakash Raj dies in an accident and Adi’s one leg has to be amputated, as a result of which his sports career ends.

His girlfriend Akanksha Singh marries him despite all the opposition, but Granthi being handicapped creates such situations in Adi’s mind which affects his married life. Being a sportsman, Adi gets a job in Sports Authority where he comes to know about a girl who is a very good runner but due to untimely death of her father, she is not able to participate in any tournament. Adi goes to her village in search of her and brings her home with him. Seeing this, Adi’s wife leaves the house and Adi wants to get this girl trained to run again. Facing many difficulties, Adi finally reaches the finals of the national level race where she wins by setting a new national record and Adi fulfills his unfulfilled dream through this girl.

There is a fundamental difference between the kind of sports films being made nowadays and Clap, in that the coach fulfills his unfulfilled dream by bringing back a player who has gone into oblivion. To some extent, this type of story was shown in Shreyas Talpade’s film Iqbal and Madhavan’s film Saala Khadoos. Adi’s career hasn’t been very long but after tasting both success and failure, Adi has worked in story-oriented films and is considered a reliable actor. He also had an important role in another recently released sports film Good Luck Sakshi. Adi sometimes also does negative character and he is also liked a lot.

In Clap, he took a drastic step and for almost the entire film he was dressed as a disabled man with one leg amputated (below the knee). Frustration and anger are clearly visible in his eyes. Not even once has he shown any unnecessary expression and even when his disciple wins a race, he controls his emotions and does not lose focus. This role will prove to be good for Adi’s career. Akanksha Singh’s character in the role of Adi’s wife is seen on screen for a short period of time but her presence brings relief to the audience with Adi battling depression. Akanksha has worked in films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada languages. He has previously worked with Kiccha Sudeep in a sports film named Pailwaan. Prakash Raj and Nassar are old rice and what to say about their acting. Krisha Kurup in the character of Bhagyalakshmi or Durga has also performed well, although she does not appear to be a good runner.

The music in the film is by Ilaiyaraaja although there is only one song in the film which appears at the beginning of the film (at the time of the title). The title track composed by Ilaiyaraaja is a proof of how melodious his symphonies are. The responsibility of editing is on the shoulders of Ragul and this is his first film so minor mistakes should be forgiven. Cinematographer Praveen Kumar is also new and this is his first film too, so his work is rough. No amazing shots or camera angles have been seen. Dramatic effects could be added to the use of slow motion in race scenes. Writer-Director Prithvi Aditya is also new but there is very little newness in the story and he has not been able to get better work from the artists in the direction. It is expected that his films and stories will get better in the coming times. The film is good. Is clean and tidy. Can be seen for motivation.
