Kenya Protest: There are massive protests going on in Kenya against the controversial finance bill. Former US President Barack Obama’s sister Auma Obama also joined this protest. During this protest, tear gas shells were fired at her.

According to CNN, the incident occurred when Kenyan-British activist Auma Obama was speaking with CNN’s Larry Madowo with a group of protesters. She said, “I can’t watch anymore, we’re being tear gassed.”

Why is there protest against the Finance Bill?

In fact, protests are being held against the proposed tax hike in Kenya’s controversial Finance Bill. The people of the country are organizing rallies under the banner of 7 Days of Rage in response to the Finance Bill 2024. Which has caused additional days of unrest across the country.

What did Oma Obama say?

Auma Obama said, “I have come here because I can see what is happening to the people. Young Kenyans are protesting for their rights. They are protesting with flags and banners.” Meanwhile, Kenya’s President William Ruto has announced that he is proud of the protesters and has expressed hope for talks with them.

Meanwhile, security personnel have been accused of kidnapping prominent Kenyans with large followings. Ahead of protests scheduled for Tuesday (25 June), Amnesty International Kenya said it was investigating the whereabouts of 12 people abducted in the middle of the night, reports CNN. Amnesty Kenya’s executive director Irungu Houghton told CNN the list includes bloggers, content creators, human rights campaigners, doctors and legislative staff.
