Matturu village is situated on the banks of Tunga river, 300 km away from Karnataka. According to the 2011 census, the total population of this village is 3000. The interesting fact about the village is that it is called the last Sanskrit speaking village of India. Every person here is well versed with Sanskrit. Even the murals on the walls are written in Sanskrit.
How did the practice of speaking Sanskrit start?
According to the information, in 1981, Sanskriti Bharati, an organization formed to promote Sanskrit, organized a 10-day workshop in Mattur. Many prominent personalities including the saint of Pejawar Math in neighboring Udupi participated in it. When the saint saw the enthusiasm of the villagers in Mattur to preserve Sanskrit, he immediately requested them to adopt the Sanskrit language. Which was accepted wholeheartedly by the local people.
It is said that Sanskrit is spoken in this village since ancient times. Although there was a time when people started speaking Kannada, but after the advice of the Swami of Pejawar Math, people here have been speaking Sanskrit language. Let us tell you that Mattur is an agricultural village, where paddy and betel nut are cultivated.
A village in Madhya Pradesh too
Let us tell you that apart from Karnataka, there is also a village in Madhya Pradesh, where people speak Sanskrit. Jhiri village, about 45 km from Rajgarh district headquarters of Madhya Pradesh, has made its own identity in the country. Every person living in this village speaks only in Sanskrit. The people here have completely adapted the Sanskrit language to their lives. Verses in Sanskrit are written on the walls of the village. Here people start their day not with good morning but with Namo Namah.

In Jhiri village with a population of 1000, women, farmers, labourers and even small children speak in Sanskrit. This was started by social worker Vimala Tiwari in 2002. She started teaching Sanskrit in the village. After which gradually the people of the village started coming closer to this ancient language and today the whole village speaks fluent Sanskrit.
