Ganga Dussehra 2023: In Hinduism, every festival has its own importance. Ganga Dussehra is celebrated in this Shresthi on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of next month i.e. Jyeshtha month. This year Ganga Dussehra is falling on 30 May 2023, Tuesday. Donating on this day also has special significance. It is believed that on this day Mother Ganga came to earth. Bathing in the Ganges on this day has special significance. If you bathe in the Ganges on this day, then by doing so all your sins will be washed away. Ganga Dussehra on this date is also called Gangavataran. On this date ten sins are destroyed by bathing, donating and offering, hence it is called Dussehra.
Why is Ganga Dussehra celebrated?
According to the scriptures, Lomash Rishi had narrated the story of Ganga Maa coming to earth to Yudhishthir. Maharaj Bhagirath is credited with bringing the holy river Ganges of the universe to the earth. Pleased with the harsh penance of Bhagirath, Mother Ganga came to earth. Bhagirath had done penance, his aim was to give salvation to his ancestors. Bhagirath’s penance paid off and he succeeded in bringing Ganga to earth.
Bhagirath asked Brahma ji for two boons. First, he wanted the water of the Ganges for the salvation of his ancestors, and second, he needed a son to continue his lineage. Brahma ji gave both the boons and also said that the speed of Ganga will be so fast that the earth will not be able to handle it. Took the help of Bholenath to handle him. Bholenath took Ganga Maa on his head.
