Traders say that earlier people used to purchase these items a month before Makar Sankranti, now the increasing popularity of fast food and sugar-rich foods has caused a deep blow to their livelihood. Chandrashekhar Singh (85 years old) told Local18 that jaggery and other traditional food items are not only good in taste but also have health benefits. Jaggery strengthens the digestive system, controls cholesterol and provides energy to the body.
At the same time, grains like sesame and kutki are rich in calcium and fiber, which strengthen the bones. Elderly people believe that people are ignoring this simple solution for their health under the influence of Chinese and fast food.
