Goons imposed strange tax, fee will have to be paid for shady trees at home, increased troubles for pensioners

There are many places in the world where apart from the government, criminals also collect haft or tax from people. This includes many cities of Mexico. Cartels do this work in Mexico. A unique type of tax has been implemented here. Now people will also have to pay tax for the shady trees in their gardens and this has been named shadow tax.

Los Ciclones and Los Metros, divisions of the Gulf Cartel, charge families a fee for each tree that shades a house. The aim is to collect money from people in Tamaulipas who have planted trees in their gardens to protect themselves from the scorching sun. According to Milenio’s report, the extortion fee was first implemented in March.

It is believed that a good house and garden will become a privilege, which only a select few will be able to enjoy. According to the Daily Star, people living in the area contacted the news outlet to expose the new tax being imposed by criminal gangs. Of these, two are from the municipality of Valle Hermoso and one from Rio Bravo.

Graciela, whose name has been changed, told The Shadow Right the extortion took place on March 27, the day after her husband’s birthday. Some people came who said they were from La Empresa (Los Ciclones) and told them that from now on they were going to charge houses for trees. They forced their way in and said a fee would be charged for four trees, including a small tree that provided shade to the dog when it lay down on the ground.

Graciela, 62, said she would have to cut down her trees if she didn’t pay, but neither she nor her 70-year-old husband had the strength to do so. If they are not able to pay the extortion fee, he said they will have to pay a person from the cartel to fell four of their trees. The price per tree is 100 pesos (about Rs 520) per month.

Graciela’s husband Ignacio told that because he is old he does not feel pity on you here. They all pay. Other neighbors pay for their home repairs, your car, the animals. There is no respect for senior citizens here, if you don’t pay, they kill you.
