Controversy over Agneepath scheme

During the recently concluded Parliament session, the opposition raised questions about the Agneepath scheme. After cornering the government, amid the controversy over the Agneepath scheme, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh refuted the claims of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha and said that it was implemented after taking suggestions from 158 organisations. Regarding the military recruitment scheme, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the government sees Agniveers as disposable labourers and does not even give them the status of martyrs.

The scheme was started in 2022

The Agnipath scheme announced on June 14, 2022, provides for the recruitment of youth in the age group of 17 to 21 years for only four years, with a provision to retain 25 percent of Agniveers for the next 15 years. The government later increased the upper age limit to 23 years. Under the scheme, the upper age limit was relaxed by 5 years for the first batch of former Agniveers and by three years for subsequent batches.
