This was discussed in an important meeting held recently between executives of social media companies and government officials. This issue was raised in the first meeting of the Grievance Appellate Committees (GAC) formed under the new IT rules.

Government officials have asked social media companies about ways to remove or prevent inaccurate maps of India from being displayed using tools or filters. The question of these officials was whether there is any way to prevent wrong maps of India from appearing on social media?

Many controversies have come up

Many controversies have come to light regarding wrong portrayal of parts of the country. In view of the continuously increasing such incidents, the government is now looking for a way to deal with them. There was controversy in 2020 when Twitter (now X) showed Ladakh as part of China. After this, in 2022, YouTuber Dhruv Rathi was accused of using the wrong map of India. After this, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had given orders to block the related video.

There can be punishment for showing wrong map

There is a provision in the law for punishment and fine for showing wrong map of India. Some reports say that under the proposed law, imprisonment of up to 7 years and a fine of up to Rs 100 crore can be imposed. However, this bill has not yet been presented in Parliament. A bill takes the form of law only after it is presented in Parliament.
