In a strange story, a man suddenly disappeared and there was no news about him for 56 years. But suddenly his grandson got information about him in a very strange way. Then it was revealed that Alfred Swinscoe of the UK was murdered on the same night he disappeared. His disappearance troubled his relatives for five decades. But after a dead body was found, a picture of two strange socks revealed the truth.
Grandpa was 54 when he went missing on a cold night in January 1967. He gave his son Gary 10 bob for last orders at their local pub, the Miners Arms in Pinxton, Derbyshire, and went to the outside toilet. But then he just vanished into thin air. He didn’t appear for a long time, then Gary thought he might have gone home. But he hadn’t made it home.
After 56 years of no answers, his grandson, Russell Lowbridge, 61, found a police post on social media about a body that had been dug up in a nearby farmer’s field. In April 2023, human bones and a man’s clothing, including two odd socks, were found buried 6ft underground in a field in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Norfolk. The farmer called the police when some remains began to fall out as he dug.

Russell, who last saw his grandfather Alfred when he was just four years old, instantly recognised the socks. “I didn’t pay much attention at first but then the police posted a picture of a pair of strange socks and I suddenly remembered that as a child, I used to wear my grandfather’s socks. I called the police and they came to take a DNA swab. That’s when we realised it was actually Alfred,” he told The Mirror.
The post-mortem revealed Alfred had been brutally murdered and had struggled to save his life. Now, Russell is making a final push for information before the investigation into his grandfather’s case is closed forever as many questions remain unanswered.
