The issue of hit-and-run was raised inside the Assembly in Gujarat on Thursday, in which figures for the last three years were presented. During this, it was told in the House that in the last three financial years, more than 3400 people have lost their lives and more than 2700 have been injured.

According to the data tabled in the House, a total of 4860 cases of hit-and-run have been reported in the state, which includes 1499 in the year 2020-21, a total of 1,591 in 2021-22 and 1,770 in 2022-23.

How many deaths in hit-and-run cases?

Of these 4,860 road accidents, 3,449 persons have died, including 329 deaths in Ahmedabad district and 2,720 persons have been injured.

According to the data, 1,069 people died in the financial year 2020-21, 1,158 in 2021-22 and 1,222 in 2022-23, indicating a steady increase in such fatal accidents.

What does the state government say?

The state government said it has taken several steps to reduce hit-run cases, including organizing programs to spread traffic awareness at regular intervals, fixing speed limits by issuing notifications.

Apart from this, it also includes identifying the violators of the rules by using speed-gun and punishing the criminals involved in such cases and organizing special operations to arrest them.

The state government also told the Assembly that joint enforcement teams of police, municipal corporation and RTO officials have been formed in urban areas to patrol and enforce laws as directed by the Gujarat High Court.
