What is the punishment for hacking in India?

The crime of hacking in India is defined under section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Under this section, a person who commits the offense of unauthorized access to a computer or computer network can be punished with imprisonment and fine. Hacking in India is punishable by up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to five lakh rupees. If the same offense is committed again, the term of imprisonment may extend to ten years with fine which may extend to ten lakh rupees.

Apart from punishment under the IT Act for hacking, the person can also be charged with other related offenses like theft, cheating and mischief under the Indian Penal Code. The severity of the punishment depends on the nature and extent of the offense committed. If hacking endangers national security, the punishment can be more severe.
