In a research published in Nature Genetics Journal, scientists said that Arabica plant did not exist at all. It was born when two other species of coffee joined together in the forests of Ethiopia 1 million years ago. What happened was that due to the wind, the pollen from both the species combined and gave birth to the Arabica plant. These two species were C. eugenioides and C. canephora.

State University biologist and research team member Victor Albert says, C. Arabica is a hybrid plant. It was prepared by the union of pollens and with this the world famous coffee was born. Earlier it was said that the coffee plant was born 10 thousand years ago. This theory was rejected by this team of scientists. Researchers said, we did genetic research on Arabica seeds, which tells us that it originated between 60000 years to 10 lakh years ago.

A Muslim man brought to India
It is believed that before this its cultivation started in Ethiopia only. From there its business started in the Middle East. Then it spread throughout the world. It was a popular drink in the Middle East until the 15th century. It is said that an Indian Sufi Muslim who went to Mecca came to India with seven seeds from Yemen. They were planted in the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka around 1670. And this is where coffee started in India. Today Arabica plants are grown in more than 50 countries.
