What is Nazul land?
Nazul land simply means land for which no heir has been found for many years. When this happens, the state government gets this land and the government has full rights. To understand this, we need to know about some events that happened before independence. In fact, when the British ruled India, some princely states were with the British, but some rebelled against their rule.
Government’s occupation of unclaimed lands
Those who raised their voice against the British received various types of punishments. Such people also had many acres of land, which the British used to capture. After this the land remained in possession. Many people would leave their land and run away on their own. Now such lands were called Nazul lands. After independence, the lands claimed by the people were returned. But there were many lands for which no heir was found. No one had any record of these lands, so these lands went into Nazul. State governments took possession of all such lands.

Now let us talk about how common people can use Nazul land and what kind of work can be done on it. In fact, Nazul transfer rules were made in 1956 to use these lands which had been lying barren for years. In this, many types of works started being done for public interest, like hospital, park, municipality, school etc. were built. The lands which were cultivable were given on lease to people who did not have cultivable land. However, no matter how it is being used, the ownership rights over the land remain with the state government. It can neither be sold nor given to anyone else.
